UltraSwim 33.3 #5Montenegro is the original Epic Adventure Swim Race™. The founding event of our series, we will return for a fourth time in 2025 for the iconic ‘Fjords to the Sea’ Edition.
Swimmers can look forward to the challenge of a country to country channel crossing from Croatia to Montenegro, swimming through an abandoned submarine pen, around a prison island and of course the famous Blue Cave (pictured above, startline of the marathon 10km swim if the sometimes choppy Adriatic coastline weather permits).

THE VENUE
One of the smaller countries of the Balkans, Montenegro offers both wild mountains and deep fjords, as well as a rugged Adriatic coastline, which in turn produces a variety of conditions - perfect for an Epic Adventure Swim Race™! Montenegro was our founding event back in 2022 and remains on the UltraSwim 33.3 calendar due to its appeal to swimmers. We stay near the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and enjoy the services of our brilliant partners at the Lazure Hotel Spa & Marina in Herceg Novi.
THE COURSE
This course* around the Lustica peninsula offers a few particularities - including a start line inside a giant ‘blue’ cave, a full loop of an old prison island as an untimed section, and a race mark inside an abandoned submarine base from the Yugoslavia era. The course layout itself is of course point-to-point with the majority of starts and finishes in the water.

SWIMMING CONDITIONS
At the end of the summer season, shorter days and variable weather, #5Montenegro can present a variety of conditions. Expect anything from summer-like afternoon heat with flat calm waters, to stormy conditions we will safely navigate together. The combination of the wild Adriatic coast and protected fjord areas gives us a few options in case of windy conditions and rough seas - but certainly don’t expect flat calm every day. Difficult to predict currents have added some challenges in our previous editions - but hasn’t stopped even the slower swimmers from nailing their 33.3 challenge and earning their Finisher droplets!
The water temperature is expected between 20-22°C with occasional small patches around 15-18°C (as isolated cold springs popup). These conditions are suitable for both skins and wetsuits.
TRAVEL AND LOGISTICS
Arrive in stunning Dubrovnik, Croatia, by scheduling your flight to land no later than 14:00 on Thursday, October 3rd. We'll provide seamless land transfers to your destination. Alternatively, opt for a direct flight to Tivat, Montenegro, with arrival no later than 15:00, where we transfer you by boat straight from the airport and with no border to cross! You can always extend your stay to explore historic Dubrovnik, and the rugged beauty of the Black Mountains, or the enchanting fjords of Kotor Bay.
Departure flights as early as 15:00 on the 7th offer flexibility for planning.

The distance of the iconic English Channel spread over a long weekend. This is the ultimate challenge. Push yourself and join the ranks of the 33.3 finishers! By selecting this option you will swim the entire 33.3km distance solo, over 5-7 swims, across 4 days. Any determined open-water swimmer can do this.

Share the distance
This duo relay option is a great introduction to the UltraSwim 33.3 concept. By selecting this option you share the distance with a fellow swimmer, split approximately 22.2km each. Both of you will do the full 5km on the final day. 100 Euro discount per swimmer. DISCOVERY

This option allows you to discover the magic of UltraSwim 33.3 without the pressure. You will swim a short distance each day and get to know our event as you build towards the ultimate 33.3km distance.
