Experienced Coaching Support for Participants

UltraSwim 33.3 has a growing number of Affiliate Coaches and Clubs. We aren’t making a detailed judgement on coaching ability, but these are people we are already working with, who have brought or sent swimmers to one of our events, who actively promote the event, and that we know get it and what is required in terms of preparation. They have almost all actually swum one or more UltraSwim 33.3 events. They understand what kind of preparation is needed for a 33.3km open water swimming event like UltraSwim 33.3 - so why not make use of that knowledge?

Some of the coaches run their own week long camps in various parts of the world, so we’ve put a sample of those below - great way 6 to 9 months out for example to get some focused training time, work on technique, and get early advice on what you need to focus on to prepare well for the big swim. Some also have developed training plans of their own that you can purchase along with their remote coaching support. In the case of Swim Smooth there is since November 2025 also a personalised and customised for a multi-day challenge UltraSwim 33.3 digital training app - paid for - but well worth it if you want to really get a dedicated programme tuned to your own abilities.

Our Affiliated Coaches also offer, in conjunction with the event, a pre-event preparation camps in both #12Croatia and #16Montenegro - 2 perfect days to get you fully ready for the UltraSwim 33.3 startline! More details right here -

I’m already active in the swim coaching world for many years. I have been Swim Smooth certified coach from 2016 till 2024 with a lot of focus on open water swimming.

I have successfully coached athletes to several long distance swim events in the past years.

We are running a swimsquad in Belgium with 4 coached swim sessions a week and I already performed over 1000 swim video analyses from front crawl swimmers.

Every year, I’m running a training camp in Club La Santa - Lanzarote. There are 2 consecutive camps next year. The first camp will start on 29/03/2025 (for 7 nights) and the second camp starts at 05/04/2025 and I’m willing to focus on preparing swimmers to the UltraSwim events. Last year, I had 26 participants to the camps.

Swimming has always been a part of my life. I grew up in the competitive lanes; trained hard, raced and chased seconds as an elite swimmer on the international stage. I know what it’s like to push hard. I also know what it’s like to hit a wall, to lose the joy for swimming and to find my way back to the water and on my own terms.

    That’s what shaped Simcoachen.

Today, I coach swimmers of all levels since 2012; from complete beginners to triathlete pros and open water swimmers. I have my background both in Total Immersion and Swim Smooth and I love helping people to not just work on strength in the water but to be more effective and efficient. I coach both in the pool and open water; private sessions, group training, online programs and camps throughout the year, both in Sweden where I am based and other countries.

I have been ocean swim coaching as Devon Sea Swim  for 4 years and open water swimming since 2000.    But my swim and ocean journey started well before that.    As a teenager I won national titles and British silver medals as a sprinter.  Yacht sailing became a passion after university, along with surfing and both took me traveling recreationally round the world , experiencing many different oceans and coastlines as skipper including Croatia, Greece and Turkey.   My ocean swimming and distance swim challenges started when I worked in New Zealand and included being part of a team that came second in the very competitive 45km  Lake Taupo  relay race and Mount Maunganui swim  where I was 3rd lady out.    I have ocean swum extensively in the Chanel islands.  I have also swum with the RnLZi round the whole or Torbay.

I now live in Devon and am growing my own team of ocean swimmers as back in 2012   I could not find any swimmers to train with for my first Dart 10k.  I have since trained swimmers who have successfully completed 2 x Ultraswim 33s, numerous swimmers for the Dart 10k and the  rough Hurly Burly 10k and one swimmer who this year completed a non stop 24km swim round Torbay. Made more amazing by the fact that he could not do 25 meters front crawl 1 year ago.  I have also supported training for our own ICE  mile world record holder.

My coaching emphasis is getting swimmers to feel confident in the water, to understand how they move in the water and how the water moves them.  Spending time in the sea is key to a good enjoyable distance  swim.  I spend most of summer mornings and weekends coaching swimmers along the coast of Torbay so that they feel at home in the water.

Rhian offers  sea swim coaching sessions from introductions to safe sea swimming right through to distance building coastal swims.  Video analysis and sea swim confidence  building sessions also available.

Training plans by our Affiliated Coaches

  • More information  https://www.swimsmooth.guru/training/v2

Preparing for an UltraSwim33.3 is unlike any other challenge. It’s not just about putting in the kilometres — it’s about developing rhythm, resilience, and refined technique under real, accumulating fatigue. That’s why we’ve created two fully dedicated training plans inside the Swim Smooth GURU — available in both 16-week and 24-week formats — written specifically for the unique demands of this spectacular four-day race series.

What sets these plans apart is not just their structure, but the technology behind them. The GURU doesn’t simply deliver sessions; it tracks your progress, monitors your fitness development, and even predicts where your fitness is heading so you stay accountable and on track. And through patented Stroke Insights℗, your Apple or Garmin device becomes a real-time technique coach, giving you personalised feedback on your stroke mechanics — something no PDF plan or generic online program can offer.

Both plans follow the same proven pathway:

    Base Phase (Weeks 1–6 / 1–8):
Build aerobic efficiency, refine technique, and reinforce rhythm and body position through consistent CSS-based work.

    Build Phase (Weeks 7–11 / 9–16):
Develop strength and sustainable speed through longer Red Mist cycles, controlled tempo pacing, and threshold training that teaches you to hold form under load.

    Race Phase (Weeks 12–16 / 17–24):
Shift into event-specific conditioning with longer continuous swims, sighting practice, drafting skills, and pacing work that mirrors UltraSwim race flow.

To prepare you for UltraSwim’s signature multi-day format, the plans also include structured “fatigue-stacking” weekends — series of four purposeful sessions completed across Friday to Monday, spaced once a month in the build-up. These blocks cultivate the physical robustness and mental composure needed to perform across several consecutive days.

Every session has intent: to balance technique, fitness, and open-water skill so you arrive strong, efficient, and composed across all 33.3 kilometres. Trust the structure, stay consistent, and enjoy the camaraderie that builds as you prepare for one of the world’s most rewarding swim events.

These plans were written by Paul Newsome, Head Coach of Swim Smooth and winner of the first two UltraSwim33.3 events in Montenegro. They’re built on the same principles we coach every day — proof that we walk the walk as well as talk the talk, driven by a genuine passion for helping swimmers perform at their best.
